Sphinx Park, Colorado's history is closely tied to the Denver and South Park Railroad and its role as a summer retreat destination. The area developed in the 1920s and 30s, with summer residences and cabins being built to escape the city heat, according to Historic Jeffco. The Bucksnort Saloon, a long-standing landmark, originated from the Sphinx Park Mercantile, a store that served the area's residents and railroad workers. The area is also known for its unique natural features, including granite domes and rock climbing opportunities.
Development and Summer Retreats:
Sphinx Park emerged as a residential community north of Pine Grove, expanding with cottages and cabins, especially in the 1920s and 30s.
These residences ranged from stone lodges to rustic cabins, serving as summer escapes from the heat and pace of Denver.
Many residents arrived by train on the Denver and South Park Railroad, which also provided a connection for nearby mining communities.
The Bucksnort Saloon:
The Bucksnort Saloon, a prominent landmark, grew from the Sphinx Park Mercantile, which was a general store serving the area's residents, railroad workers, and miners.
The mercantile later evolved into a venue for live performances, dances, and eventually a bar/restaurant, gaining its name "Bucksnort" in the 1970s.
Natural Features:
Sphinx Park is known for its granite domes along Elk Creek, formed through weathering processes.
The area also offers rock climbing opportunities, attracting climbers and visitors seeking a glimpse of the natural landscape.
Historical Significance:
The Denver and South Park Railroad played a crucial role in the development and transportation of people to Sphinx Park.
The Bucksnort Saloon represents a long-standing community gathering place and a symbol of the area's historical character.
The area's unique geological features and natural beauty contribute to its unique character.
